The city of ibadan, located in Oyo State of Nigeria, is known for its unique brown roof. This roof can be found on homes, buildings, and other structures throughout the city, and have become a distinctive feature of ibadan skyline which has become the staple of Ibadan's buildings is now a symbol of the city's rich cultural and historical heritage.
The origins of the brown roofs of Ibadan can be traced back to the 1950s, when the British colonial government established a policy of standardizing the roofs building in Nigeria. when the city was first founded as a hub of trade and commerce, the city was rapidly expanding, and there was a need for sturdy and durable building materials that could withstand the harsh tropical climate. At that time, most roofs in the country were made of thatch or other natural materials, which were prone to damage and required frequent repairs.
in an effort to improve the durability and longevity of roofs in Nigeria, the British government introduced a new roofing materials known as “abestos cement sheets.” These sheets were made from mixtures of abestos fiber and cement, and were believed to be more durable and long-lasting than traditional roofing material.
As abestos cement sheets became more widely used in ibadan and other parts of nigeria the city began to develop distinctive brown color. This was due to the fact that the sheets were coated with a thin layer of brown paint which helped to protect them from the elements and extend their lifespan
However, the brown roofs of Ibadan have not yet disappeared, Over time they’ve become a symbol of the city’s growing prosperity and it’s commitment to modernizing it’s infrastructure.
Today, the brown roofs of the amazing city of ibadan are still a distinctive feature of the city’s skyline. They are testament to the city’s history and it’s on going commitment to progress and modernization. Whether you are a visitor or a resident of ibadan, the brown roofs are integral part of the city’s identity and symbol of its rich cultural heritage.
